Urban Design Summer School: housing led masterplanning

Friday 12th - Saturday 13th September 2014
University of Kent Fine Art Studio, Chatham Historic Dockyard

The Kent Design 2014 Summer School looks at St Mary's Island, Chatham - site of a successful transformation from Royal Navy depot to a community with over 1000 homes. Participants will enjoy an intensive and immersive period of direct learning on St Mary' Island itself - studying the realisation of previous masterplans and exploring how the new and growing community is being engaged in planning the last phase of the Island's housing led regeneration.

This year's Summer School will be an intensive and immersive mix of small group tutorials led by some of the UK's leading practitioners, walking tours, practical drawing skills workshops, group presentations and discussions, and a series of inspirational talks. Students will be masterplanning a site themselves, thereby gaining an insight into the masterplanning process, building detailed knowledge of one of the UK's largest and most successful housing-led masterplanning schemes, and also developing practical skills associated with developing a plan.

Confirmed speakers and tutors include:

Hendrik Heyns (Director, Allies and Morrison)
James Gross (Director of Masterplanning, Barton Willmore)
Gabor Stark (MA Urban Design subject leader, University of the Creative Arts)
Marcus Wilshire (London Masterplanning Lead, IBI Taylor Young)
Andy von Bradsky (Chairman, PRP)

The Summer School package includes dinner and overnight accommodation on the Friday evening, offering outstanding networking opportunities to participants. Students will stay at the Encore Hotel (250 metres from the case study area), and will be based in the University of Kent’s Fine Art Studio at Chatham Historic Dockyard.

In delivering the first Kent Design summer school on housing led masterplanning we continue to provide great training and value for money to our members: a cornerstone of our appeal. However, hosting a summer school incurs costs over and above those associated with the normal training provision. To ensure we can offer great value for members seeking to secure places on the summer school, Kent Design has developed a special subsidised members' price:

UCA students and Kent Design members are able to book a maximum of two Summer School place for a subsidised rate of just £100 per place.

Non Kent Design members (or members wishing to book more than two places) will be charged £200 per place.

Kent Design is able to offer a maximum of 20 places at the subsidised rate of £100, and 10 places at the non-subsidised rate of £200. Please note that we can not exceed 30 places for the Summer School.

Kent Design Members can book places by emailing kentdesign@designsoutheast.org

Non Kent Design members can book online here.
