Or Herbert Read goes to town

Three weeks into the semester, our Master of Architecture students presented their first project of the year. The brief asked for the design of a new exhibition and event space for the University for the Creative Arts – an outpost of the long-established Herbert Read Gallery on UCA’s Canterbury campus.

Founded in 1984 and named after the British art historian, writer and anarchist Herbert Read, the campus gallery hosts exhibitions on fine art, architecture, design and fashion. Artists who have shown at the gallery include Yoko Ono, Jeremy Deller, Hans Haacke, Fischli & Weiss and Atelier Van Lieshout, to name just a few. The gallery also regularly displays works by students and staff as well as the annual Graduation shows.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions the gallery has been unable to welcome visitors since spring 2020 and was provisionally turned into a teaching space in 2020/21 – a situation that continues in the current academic year. Students revived the dormant gallery by speculating about a centrally located exhibition and event space, a new interface between the campus and the city, that would allow UCA to contribute to Canterbury’s cultural and civic landscape in new ways.

What actually is a gallery? What could and should it be? Are there alternatives to the ideology of the “white cube” (Brian O’Doherty, 1986)? If so, how can one re-contextualise the gallery typology? How can architecture offer new opportunities to curate art and design exhibitions? How can a university gallery actively contribute to the public realm? How can UCA share its talent, knowledge and expertise and engage with the wider urban community?
