M.ARCH
Shrine Project

For the first design project of the academic year, staff and students on the Master of Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) at Canterbury School of Architecture and Design collaborated with the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury. The Roman Catholic church houses two important sets of relics of St Thomas Becket (1119–1170) and St Oskar Romero (1917–1980) and was designated a Diocesan Shrine in 2019.
The parish approached the course to help developing ideas for the reorganisation of its Martyrs’ Chapel to present a more attractive liturgical space and experience for worshippers and visitors. Here a selection of images of the eleven group proposals students presented to Canon Anthony Charlton, Joanna Cooke, and other parishioners at the St Thomas Hall on Friday 14 October 2022.

"The standard and competence of the designs and the rendering of each of the 11 schemes really blew us away. As a group, we expected one stand-out project to emerge, providing us with a clear direction to take, and allowing us to move forward with the shrine redesign. However, what we were presented with was eleven uniquely fascinating projects, each with its own individual merits and possibilities. In Father Anthony’s words, we were presented with a ‘feast’ of imaginative concepts, all of which we could feasibly take to completion."
