01 // TESTING THE WATER – AN INHABITED BRIDGE FOR LONDON

Following calls for improved strategic connectivity across the River Thames, this year our studio unit will collectively speculate upon proposals for an ‘inhabited’ bridge across London’s bountiful but challenging river. In doing so we shall adopt, interrogate, critique and reimagine the river and its environs as a place in which to live, work and play, deconstruct and reconstruct preconceived ideas of what river crossings might be, and rigorously speculate upon the inhabited bridge as an active and vibrant fragment of the city in its own right.

02 // + STUDIO – RE-CLAIMING THE FIFTH CONTINENT

Identified as the fifth continent, the wilderness frontier of Romney Marsh provides a defence for (and against) the heavily populated Southeast. Decisions to defuel nuclear power stations at its capital Dungeness, that currently deter its occupation, open this contested territory for claim to exploit its “resources”. Within a context of diminishing power production, reduced access to European markets, refugee influx, domestic migration, arts cuts, natural eco system threat etc. this studio will follow the evolution of historic wilderness claims through the scales of Scout, Pioneer, Settler and Colony to explore a future for, and route to, re-claim the Fifth Continent.

03 // COASTAL COALITION

The British coastline conjures up images of ruggedness and leisure, industry and pastorality. Once the site of wealth, in the last century it has become at best a place for nostalgia, more typically a symbol of deprivation. Taking the full length of the Great Britain’s coastline – a strip 1 mile wide, following the immeasurable contour of this island – and using the toolkit of the naturalist, the painter, the poet, the economist and - why not? - the architect, the studio will form a think-tank to explore how we can intervene in the changing physical, cultural and socioeconomic realities of towns, marshes, cliffs, and beaches.

04 // SYN CITY 51ºN – ARCHITECTURE CLIMATE ACTION

Using the 51st parallel north as its collective territory of investigation, the studio will explore the causes, current manifestations and future risks of global warming due to man-made climate change. Adopting Timothy Morton’s concepts of hyperobjects, non-locality and interobjectivity as key theoretical frameworks, students will oscillate between evidence-based research and speculative design methodologies in order to develop large-scale and long-term strategies as well as tangible design solutions required to adapt to and mitigate the challenges of ecological crises and emergencies.
